Aspen Airport

The Aspen/Pitkin County Airport, also known as Sardy Field, serves the greater Aspen-Snowmass area. This small, county-owned public airport is served by only two airlines, which operate daily, all year long. This is the country’s only slope side airport, and is located in the Roaring Fork Valley. It is only three miles from Aspen and six to Snowmass Village. Both of these are extremely popular ski destination for vacationers, and as such the airport is very busy during ski season. It runs more than a hundred fights per week, including both direct and connecting flights.

Currently, the two airlines that serve the Aspen/Pitkin County Airport are United Express, which is operated by SkyWest, and Republic Airlines, which is operated by Frontier Airlines. Both of these airlines have full service for the local public, including baggage claims, ticket counters, and offices. Both airlines receive and return service from Denver International Airport, although during the high ski season United flies to Chicago-O’Hare, Los Angeles-LAX, San Francisco, and Houston-Intercontinental.

This airport’s airspace is under the jurisdiction and control of the FAA Air Traffic Control tower and the airspace surrounding the airport is listed as Class D airspace. The Control Tower is operating daily from 7:00 AM until 10:00 PM, and is completely closed between the hours of 11 PM and 7 AM. The runway is currently being extended from its current length of 7,006 feet to 8,006 feet by November 30. It was also recently re-asphalted and improved.

The Sardy Field terminal was also recently renovated. It was originally built in 1976, and has since been expanded several times to its current size of 44,000 square feet. It is a single-floor facility and has all the main services passengers and airport staff will require, such as a full-service restaurant, bar, courtesy telephones, bathroom facilities, a gift and news shop, newspaper vendor, lockers, food and drink vending machines, administrative offices, ground transport agencies, and five rental car kiosks. There is also a customer service desk, where travelers can obtain information about flights, local transportation, and events.

Arrivals to and departures from the Aspen/Pitken Country Airport come in at different ends of the runway, depending on their approach, since one side of the valley the airport is located in features steep mountain ridges. The organization of the flight paths and departures will change when the Sardy Field runway lengthening project is complete in November 2011. Departures and arrivals are listed on the airport’s website and are regularly updated.

Baggage claim and handling is done on-site. Due to strict federal flight security procedures, it is recommended that all fliers arrive at Sardy Field at least an hour prior to departure, to avoid long waits in line and rushing. Always be sure to clearly label your baggage and not exceed the number of checked or carry-on items allowed.
